I am Daniel Sobczak, a Georgia educator and union leader with nearly two decades of experience advocating for public education, educators, and students at the local, state, and national levels. My work has always been grounded in the belief that strong public schools and strong educator voices are essential to our communities, our democracy, and our future. I am a classroom economics teacher at Southwest DeKalb High School, where I have proudly taught for the past nineteen years. Remaining in the classroom throughout my career has grounded my advocacy in the real, day-to-day realities educators face and has shaped my approach to leadership as practical, informed, and focused on improving teaching and learning conditions. My union involvement began early in my career and has grown into nearly twenty years of sustained leadership. I have served four terms on the Georgia Association of Educators Board of Directors: first as District 2 Director from 2012 to 2015, then as NEA Director from 2015 to2018 and again from 2018 to 2021 following re-election, and later returning as District 2 Director from 2021 to 2024. During my six years as an elected NEA Director, I represented Georgia educators on the National Education Association Board of Directors, ensuring educator voices were included in national conversations that directly impact classrooms across our state. At the local level, I currently serve as 1st Vice President of the Organization of DeKalb Educators (ODE) and have held multiple leadership roles within the organization over the years. This local leadership experience continues to ground my advocacy in the needs of educators across job categories and career stages. In 2024, I was elected to serve on the Georgia Association of Educators Fund for Children and Public Education (GAE FCPE), furthering my commitment to advancing policies and initiatives that strengthen public education and support Georgia's students statewide. My roots in Georgia run deep. My family moved to the state in 1986, and I am a proud graduate of the Gwinnett County Public School System. Today, I help raise my two nephews, Jensen and Grayson, who are current students in DeKalb County Schools. Being both an educator and a guardian to public school students makes this work personal as well as professional. It is about protecting the future for the children we teach and care for every day. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Oglethorpe University, a Master of Education in Social Studies Education from Georgia State University, and a Specialist in Education in Advanced Educational Studies from Augusta University.
